Welcome, my dearest darlings, to Die Huis Van Legends!
A majestic sanctuary where the golden threads of South African entertainment history are lovingly preserved. Here, in our grand abode, you’ll find a museum, a theater, and a television studio, each one pulsating with the essence of artistic brilliance.
What exactly is Die Huis Van Legends?
It’s not just a house, my treasures; it’s a temple where we pay tribute to the most exceptional singers, actors, theater icons, and TV and radio personalities to ever grace the stage and screen. These titans of talent—our legends—are individuals who have excelled in their fields, attaining the kind of renown and adoration that most can only dream of.
Now, let’s delve into the heart and history of this magnificent institution, shall we?
The Foundation of The South African Legends Museum
The year was 2019. The man was Shaun Mynhardt—a member of South Africa’s entertainment royalty. His illustrious lineage includes Siegfried Mynhardt, the legendary theater and television actor (1909–1996), and Min Shaw, a singer and actress celebrated as one of the three greatest stars of the last century, according to Huisgenoot.
Shaun, a biographer extraordinaire, has documented the lives of luminaries like Min Shaw and Cora Marie, whose stories became bestsellers within mere months of publication. Shaun studied Law and worked for the Biggest companies in South-Africa in various Legal and CRM roles. But his passion extended beyond words on a page. Inspired by a heartfelt conversation with Min Shaw over tea in 2014, Shaun asked himself a pivotal question:
“What are we doing to preserve the legacies of our heroes?”
Stage costumes, awards, and other precious memorabilia—where do they go once the final curtain falls? Far too often, they vanish into the ether, relegated to dusty suitcases and forgotten shelves. It was this conundrum that drove Shaun to action.
Thus, Die Huis Van Legends was born on August 19, 2019, as a private project—a labor of love, funded entirely by Shaun and his dedicated team. No subsidies. No handouts. Only determination and passion. And in January 2020, the museum officially opened its doors to the public.
A Labor of Love
For five years, Shaun, Clyde and Min Shaw traveled tirelessly across South Africa, visiting legends of the stage, screen, and airwaves to collect their memorabilia. Nearly 95% of those approached agreed to contribute, entrusting Shaun with treasures ranging from stage costumes to awards.
The museum currently boasts over 15,000 items in its archives, with more than 120 exhibitions rotating every three months to ensure every legend has their moment in the spotlight. Among the icons celebrated here are the likes of Gé Korsten, Mimi Coertse, Bles Bridges, Shaleen Surtie-Richards, and countless others, both living and departed.
A Spotlight on Excellence
Barely two months after its grand opening, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing the museum to close temporarily. But legends, as we know, are nothing if not resilient. In 2021, Die Huis Van Legends reopened with a joyous celebration attended by many of its featured icons.
In 2024, the museum took to the airwaves with a 14-episode TV series on kykNET-NOU!, showcasing interviews with living legends such as Maritza, Min Shaw, and Tobie Cronje. Each episode was a glittering spectacle, complete with new musical performances and heartfelt tributes to legends we’ve lost.
Looking Ahead
The next chapter of our story begins in Cape Town! After five fabulous years in Gauteng, Die Huis Van Legends is expanding its reach. Early in 2025, our Cape Town branch will open its doors, bringing the magic of South Africa’s entertainment history to a whole new audience. And yes, darling, Series Two of our TV show is also in the works—more interviews, more performances, more enchantment!
Why Does This Matter?
Because, my loves, too many of our legends have passed away, their contributions forgotten, their treasures lost to time. Die Huis Van Legends exists to ensure that never happens again. Here, their stories live on, their voices echo, and their legacies are cherished—forever.
So, to all who enter this sacred space, prepare to be dazzled, educated, and inspired. For here, in Die Huis Van Legends, the lights never dim, and the stars never fade.
